âSo,â Will said, after making sure Pongo was settled in his crate in the kitchen, comfortably distracted with a rawhide bone. âWhere were we?â
Anne patted the plaid blanket sheâd already spread on his living room floor. A wicker basket was open behind her, and sheâd set out plates, a couple of cloth napkins, and a pair of stemmed glasses. âI thought we could have a picnic,â she said.
âItâs the end of March,â he observed.
âExactly. Thatâs why weâre inside.â
âI can think of other reasons to be inside,â he said, sinking down beside her and folding his hand around the back of her neck.
She leaned in for his kiss, as easy and generous as when heâd answered his doorbell, not fifteen minutes earlier. Sheâd stood on his porch, her smile as bright as her electric blue T-shirt. His body had immediately forgotten that he was coming off a twenty-four-hour shift, that heâd fielded three calls in the middle of the night, that heâd planned on watching a little spring training, then falling asleep in his recliner, dropping the remote in his lap.
It was a tight T-shirt. And she hadnât bothered with a bra. His lap would never be satisfied with a goddamn remote.
She tasted like toothpaste. Clean and fresh, with a zap of pure electricity that went straight to his crotch. He tugged at that clinging shirt, slipping his hands underneath so he could feel her skin as he crushed her against his chest.
Laughing, she reached around for his fingers, pulling just far enough away that she could set her forehead against his. âDinner first,â she said.
âLetâs build up a healthy appetite,â he growled, easing her back on the blanket and levering one knee between her thighs. Her breath came fast as he kissed his way up her belly. He caught her right nipple between his lips, sucking hard enough to derail whatever argument she was thinking about making.
She thrashed her head as he grazed her with his teeth. âI brought champagne,â she moaned.
He laughed. Heâd rather have beer.
But that was a lie. Heâd rather have Anne, hot and ready and already melting beneath him. His fingers twitched over the button at the top of her jeans. He slid her zipper with practiced ease. His broad palms framed her hips as he edged the denim down, taking her panties at the same time.
He followed his hands with his mouth, tonguing her bellybutton, kissing the sweet path to her thighs.
âWill,â she said, her eyes closed and her face turned away. âI havenât⦠I neverâ¦â
He paused then, resting his cheek against the her hip-bone. He could feel her heart beating, steady and strong, as if the stubble of his beard was conducting a secret message straight to his brain. He raised his head, but she wasnât looking at him. So slowly, methodically, he stroked her thighs with his thumbs, asking a silent question. Her knees fell open, even as she gave a little gasp of surprise.
Before she could change her mind, before she could
